Roger Federer beats Andy Roddick in 3 sets
NEW YORK, Sept 6 - To Andy Roddick's credit, he played nearly flawlessly against Roger Federer, serving brilliantly, returning well, too, and giving tennis' top player a tough time.
To Roddick's dismay, it all added up to yet another loss.
In a match as tight as could be for 2 1/2 sets, Federer was barely better on the most important points and emerged to edge Roddick 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the quarterfinals, moving two victories away from a fourth consecutive U.S. Open title.
"I'm not walking off with any questions in my head this time. I'm not walking with my head down," 2003 champion Roddick said after falling to 1-14 against Federer. "I made him play as well as he can play."
Both came out wearing black shirts and shorts, Roddick adding a baseball cap, and Federer his trademark bandanna. The outfits matched and so did the level of play, right down until late in the third set, when Federer finally earned his first break points.
Sept 5 - Anna Chakvetadze reached her first Grand Slam semifinal, taking the last six games Wednesday to beat Shahar Peer 6-4, 6-1 at the U.S. Open. The sixth-seeded Chakvetadze never had been as far as a major quarterfinal until this year, when she lost at that stage at the Australian Open and French Open. But from 4-4 in the first set, the Russian took control against the No. 18 Peer, the first woman from Israel to play in the U.S. Open quarterfinals. "I just started to play more aggressive," Chakvetadze said. Simple as that. "That's why Anna is a top-10 player -- she's playing really good tennis the last few months," Peer said, "and I think it's just a matter of time (until) I will get there."
